David Ebei has been helping buy and deliver camels to needy families affected from the recent disease that left many nomadic Turkana homes without camels. This is a very difficult task. Finding, buying and delivering the camels entail travel, communication and decision making, and the most difficult, who shall receive one camel first. Below are David’s photos and descriptions of some of the first to receive a female camel. Please continue to keep David in your prayers. Thank you to all who have helped to make this possible.

Aregae Eloto – Its one of the families that depend on the governemnt for support. The few goats they had were clered with drought /diseases. The only source of support they get is relief food from the governmnt and other NGos

Aro Ekitela – Its one of the families that depend on hunting and gathering in the community and government support. They used to have a few goats but due to drought, everything was almost cleared. The camel given is the only big animal they have.

Engor Echoto - These family used to have a few goats and donkeys and because of drought, the animals got cleared and were left with a few goats. These are the group of families that depend in the government for aid and support for their daily living.

Limanyang – Lived with his uncles in the first but after the death of his uncle , he was separated from the family by the elder son. He started his own life and got the family latter. They depend on gathering and government support programme like relief food.

Edaan Egiron – These family used to be rich before. After sometimes animals started dying from diseases which they believed was a curse from the ancestors. The family still struggles for life despite the calamities of drought and diseases.

Preceding the drought and the ensuing famine the Turkana lost many animals due to a tick and fly borne disease that devastated their herds. Although no one can replace all that were lost we hope to bring encouragement by purchasing one camel for each of the affected families. Our goal is to buy and deliver 200 camels over the next few months. This will bring some more immediate relief and much needed hope for the future as we continue to implement food security measures for the long term. The average cost for a female camel is $250.

Background –The nomadic Turkana depend on camel and goat milk as a major food source. Since grazing is sparse and scattered throughout this vast district, herds of goats and sheep must be moved frequently. Camels however, need less attention, and can get the most out of local forage from small trees and bushes that the goats and sheep cannot eat. Of course keeping them watered is needed less frequently due to natural storage capacity. Therefore, having a good milk camel nearby is a necessity for successful nomadic living. If possible we hope to bring into the area Somali camels found to be heartier and more resistant to the diseases that affect the local Turkana breed

Thank you for praying for Rain! Enough rain has fallen to bring up adequate grass to keep the remaining animals alive. Also, the reports from our friends in Turkana indicate that rain has fallen directly in the area of need. During the first delivery in August, as food was being delivered, all the people gathered in each location to pray for rain. The grass is now knee high and hope as been restored to people in the drought affect region. However, there is clearly a shortage of animals, including goats, sheep and camels. Please continue to pray for the herds to increase and food security restored.

The current drought is related to the same climate system causing drought in Somalia. Aid is coming in, but there is always some delay at first and our goal is to get emergency relief to the remote areas Pray for Rain and Logistics: Ability to buy food and provide immediate food relief to prevent starvation. If you would like to donate to help the Turkana, we will take the relief direct to the people and if there are additional funds we will put them into the long term projects such as wells/farm project that provides food to families long term
